P. Elizabeth Helms

Elizabeth is a senior associate with BPE Law Group, P.C.  Elizabeth’s practice focuses on civil litigation and advising small business owners on employment law compliance. Elizabeth’s clients consist of small business owners, investors, and real property owners throughout California.  She regularly advises employers on labor law compliance, best practices, and policy handbook preparation.  As part of her employment practice she audits employers’ payroll records for compliance and advises on risk mitigation.  As a litigator, she regularly defends employers in wage and hour disputes and termination cases.  She also represents investors and property owners in their real estate litigation matters and HOA disputes.

Having previously worked as an insurance broker, mortgage consultant and loan processor, Elizabeth is able to employer her unique risk management skills to a client’s real estate issues.

Some of Elizabeth’s representative matters include:

  • Successfully defended member on a lawsuit from his homeowners association by showing association violated ADA requirements; cross-complained against homeowners association for ADA violations and obtained a favorable settlement for the member;
  • Represented and defended member at homeowners association hearings and orchestrated a favorable settlement for the member that included the homeowners association approving a variance request by the member;
  • Defended members against their neighbor and obtained settlement with the homeowners association favoring members against neighbor
  • Aggressively defended employer against meritless employment law claim;
  • Negotiated a significant reduction in the amount of money employer was liable to pay employee in a wage and hour claim;
  • Conducted a workplace investigation dealing with a complaint of sexual harassment and advising employer on course of action and recommendations for avoiding future complaints;
  • Represented investor in a code enforcement dispute and obtained favorable settlement for investor including all penalties waived;
  • Defended seller in non-disclosure litigation and negotiated a settlement to the seller’s satisfaction;
  • Obtained a six-figure settlement on behalf of a real estate investor;
  • Received a favorable outcome on a motion for summary judgment on behalf of several real estate investors;
  • Obtained the full amount sought on a breach of contract case;
  • Negotiated the dismissal of a real estate agent from a lengthy and expensive lawsuit;
  • Obtained a settlement to her clients’ satisfaction in a lengthy neighbor dispute; and
  • Negotiated successful settlements with creditors, including lenders.

Elizabeth received her B.A. in English/Secondary Education from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois in 1999. While at Trinity, she was the recipient of numerous debate and English scholarships and was selected to be in Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society in education. She attended University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, where she received her J.D. and certificate in International Legal Studies in 2008, graduating on the Dean’s Honor Roll. While at McGeorge, she was the recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship, the Witkin Award in International Advocacy, an award that recognizes the student with the highest grade in the class, and was a finalist in McGeorge’s First Year Student’s Mock Trial Competition.  Additionally, she was selected to represent McGeorge in Vienna, Austria in an international commercial arbitration competition.

Elizabeth is a member of the State Bar of California, is on the Board of Directors for the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce, and is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California.  As an active member of the Citrus Heights Chamber, she participated in the Ambassador program as well as facilitated and help create the curriculum for the Leadership of Citrus Heights program.  Through Elizabeth’s involvement with the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce, BPE Law Group was recognized as the Best of Citrus Heights for 2017 and 2018.  Elizabeth has presented seminars to local business owners on employment law compliance and best practices and regularly contributes to the firm’s newsletter regarding employment law issues.

In her spare time, Elizabeth enjoys salsa dancing, playing the piano, and studying foreign languages (especially French).  As a Lymphoma survivor, Elizabeth is a former Team in Training marathon participant and has completed 2 full marathons and 4 half marathons, all for the sake of raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  When she’s not exploring local destinations, her passion is international travel, and she loves to share her travel stories of the 13+ countries she has visited thus far, especially her time spent in China and Israel.  Elizabeth and her husband, Jim, are eagerly looking forward to their next overseas adventure: a guided World War II tour of Europe!
