Within 90 miles from Sacramento and just below San Francisco, two very special and unique holiday destinations await you:

100 years ago, the Bourn family built one of the finest country homes and English gardens to be found in the United States. Created by the then owner of the Empire Mine in Grass Valley as well as the water systems supplying San Francisco, Filoli
became a part of the National Trust and is now available for tours.

Filoli is the Bourn family motto and stands for “FIght, LIve, LOve”. The country home and gardens are a tribute to that motto.  The 654 acre estate contains the main home, a 65 room mansion which is filled with lights and music and is open for tours either self-guided or docent led. The 16 acres of formal English Gardens are brightly lit for the Season and offer visitors a beautiful vision year-round.

Tickets are required to enter the grounds and home and we recommend you plan your visit ahead.  To get more information or to make your reservations, please go to

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair

Just up the road from Filoli near San Francisco airport is the historic Cow Palace, which each Christmas season is magically transformed into the London of Charles Dickens’ time.
The Great Dickens Christmas Fair is a one-of-a-kind holiday adventure into Victorian London –  an elaborate party with hundreds of costumed players performing and interacting with patrons in over 120,000 square feet of theatrically-lit music halls, pubs, dance floors, and Christmas shops.
It’s a twilight evening in Charles Dickens’ London Town – a city of winding lanes filled with colorful characters from both literature and history. Enticing aromas of roasted chestnuts and hearty foods fill the air. Cries of street vendors hawking their wares ring out above the bustling crowd. Dozens of lamplit shops are filled to overflowing with Christmas gifts. There are plays and opera at Victoria & Albert Hall, bawdy stage shows at Mad Sal’s, adventures down at the docks in Pirate Alley, and much much more. And of course, don’t miss the processional of the Queen surrounded by her Guards and a full cast of followers.
For an even better experience, many visitors come in their own Victorian costumes and join in the fun.
The Dickens Christmas Fair is a treasured Bay Area tradition since 1970 and a splendid way to celebrate the holidays. The Fair is open each weekend from 10-7 and we recommend that you get there early.  It’s easy to spend the whole day. For more information and to order tickets in advance, please go to

Closer to home, Bayside Church of Granite Bay is hosting two magical Christmas experiences throughout the Holidays:
The Christmas Lights Drive-Through is transforming Adventure Church in Rocklin into a wonderland of scenes through over 1 million lights. This one-mile drive-through experience will brighten your evening. It is free but reservations are required for traffic control.
The Special Christmas Event is a memorable experience of sights and sounds featuring the world-famous Recycled Orchestra of Cateura which has been featured in 60 Minutes, NPR, and PBS. This has become an annual holiday event for many families and over 50,000 are expected to attend the 24 performances.  Like the Lights Drive-Through, the Bayside Christmas Event is free but advance tickets are strongly recommended.
