Veterans Day is a special day. Veterans Day is on November 11th, as a reminder that World War I ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year 1918. Veterans Day honors all American veterans.

World War I ended 103 years ago (1918). World War II ended 76 years ago (1945). The Korean War technically has not ended, but the armistice was signed 68 years ago (1953). The Vietnam war ended 46 years ago (1975). The Invasion of Panama ended 31 years ago (1990). The Gulf War ended 30 years ago (1991). The Iraq War technically ended 10 years ago (2011), however, service men and women are still stationed in Iraq. The War in Afghanistan ended just recently.

Our veterans of these wars are getting older. World War II veterans are in their nineties. Korean war veterans are in their eighties and nineties. Vietnam veterans are in their sixties and seventies. Gulf War veterans tend to be in their late forties and fifties.

Independent of politics, these brave veterans answered the call of their nation in a time of need. These brave veterans trained to do the mission that their nation needed them to perform. These brave veterans sacrificed to go where their nation needed them to go. They represent the best our nation has to offer. These acts of self-sacrifice and bravery are deserving of honor and are deserving of our thanks.

This Veterans Day is an opportunity for you to personally thank those who served our country in times of war. Take the time to personally thank them while they are still here. If you know someone who served, you can simply say “thank you for your service to our country” . . . they will greatly appreciate the gesture. If you don’t know someone who personally served, there are other ways to say thank you. You can attend a Veterans Day parade. You can attend one of the many civic ceremonies honoring veterans. Through these simple acts, you can let veterans throughout the land know that you honor their sacrifice, bravery, and their service to our country.
