National Estate Planning Awareness Week is October 17 – 23, 2022. National Estate Planning Awareness Week was designated by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008 to help people understand what estate planning is, and why it is important. If you do not already have an estate plan, the good news is that your state government has created a series of laws that tell what will happen to your estate after you pass away. The bad news is that the way the state government defined the laws didn’t take into account any of your wishes, plus, it may take a lot of time, money, and frustration to go through probate with the courts. You can solve this problem by making an appointment with an estate planning attorney to express your wishes and plan what will happen to your estate after you pass away.
If you already have an estate plan, congratulations! However, when was the last time you looked at it? Situations change as life goes on. You may have a new family member since the estate plan was written. You may have acquired some different assets since the estate plan was written. If your situation has changed, now is a great time to contact your estate planning attorney to update your estate plan, to make sure it reflects your current situation and wishes.
